We've included downloads and guides for the following tools to help you create your video, publish your video and play your video. In addition to this, there is also a selection of video tools available for advanced users.


Tools for creating video

  • Handbrake - HandBrake enables you to copy and compress DVD video to MP4, AVI or OGM files for storage on your computer or distribution online.

 

  • iMovie - iMovie is a popular and simple to use editing tool for Apple computers. It comes free with older Macintosh computers though you will now have to pay for it.

 

  • Jubler - Jubler is an open source tool to edit text-based subtitles. It can be used as an authoring software for new subtitles or as a tool to convert, transform, correct and refine existing subtitles.

 

  • Windows Movie Maker - All versions of Windows have free access to a basic video editing programme, called Windows Movie Maker (WMM).

 

Tools for publishing video

  • Archive.org - The Internet Archive (commonly known as archive.org) is a non-profit organisation that hosts audio and video content from around the world. It's a place to upload your content to or find content you can redistribute or remix.Avidemux is an open source tool that you can use to you create DVD video files and add subtitles

  • Blip.TV - Blip.tv is a video sharing service that provides content creators with free hosting.

 

  • iSquint - If you are preparing a video to play it over the internet may need to make your video smaller, which is known as compressing and/or transcoding. If you are using a Mac we recommend using a freeware tool called iSquint to compress it into a smaller size.

 

  • WordPress - Learn how to create a video podcast (sometimes called a vodcast) with a WordPress.com account.

 

Tools for playing video

  • Miro is a browser for watching videos and subscribing to vodcasts - grab webpages with video and video RSS feeds (including podcasts, video blogs, and BitTorrent feeds), and watch them full screen, one after the other.

 

  • VLC is a audio/video player that will read almost any format you throw at it, including DVDs and VCDs.
